The Semont maneuver is a specific technique used to treat Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) affecting the posterior semicircular canal. This maneuver involves quick, forceful movements to dislodge the otoliths (calcium crystals) causing the vertigo.
Procedure for the Semont Maneuver for Right-Sided BPPV:
Starting Position:
Sit upright on the edge of a bed or a flat surface.
Turn Head:
Turn your head 45 degrees to the left, away from the affected right ear.
Lie Down to the Affected Side:
Quickly lie down on your right side, keeping your head turned to the left. Your head should be facing upward at a 45-degree angle.
Hold this position for 1-2 minutes, or until any dizziness subsides.
Quickly Move to the Opposite Side:
In one swift motion, move from lying on your right side to lying on your left side, without changing the position of your head. Your head will now be facing downward at a 45-degree angle.
Hold this position for 1-2 minutes, or until any dizziness subsides.
Return to Sitting Position:
Slowly return to the upright sitting position and remain seated for a few minutes to ensure that any residual dizziness passes.
Important Notes:
This maneuver uses rapid movements to dislodge the crystals in the ear, helping to alleviate the symptoms of BPPV.
Perform this maneuver once or twice a day until symptoms resolve.
It is common to feel dizzy during the maneuver, but this should decrease with repeated sessions.
Avoid sudden head movements after performing the maneuver.
If symptoms persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider.
