The Epley maneuver is a common procedure used to treat Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) of the right posterior semicircular canal. Here are step-by-step instructions for performing the Epley maneuver at home:
Before You Begin:
Find a clear space on your bed or a comfortable flat surface.
It's helpful to have someone assist you, but it can be done alone.
You may experience some dizziness during the maneuver, which is normal.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Starting Position:
Sit upright on the edge of your bed.
Turn your head 45 degrees to the right.
Place a pillow behind you so that it will rest between your shoulders when you lie down.
Lie Back Quickly:
Keeping your head turned to the right, lie back quickly so that your head is slightly hanging over the edge of the pillow.
Hold this position for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until the dizziness stops.
Turn Head to the Left:
Without lifting your head, turn your head 90 degrees to the left, so it is now 45 degrees to the left of center.
Hold this position for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until the dizziness stops.
Turn Body to the Left:
Turn your body to the left so that you are lying on your left side, with your head now facing downward at a 45-degree angle.
Hold this position for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until the dizziness stops.
Sit Up:
Keeping your head turned to the left, slowly sit up and return to a seated position.
Sit still for a few minutes to allow any residual dizziness to pass.
