The Brandt-Daroff exercises are designed to help treat Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) by habituating the brain to the positional changes that cause vertigo. These exercises can be performed at home and are particularly useful if other maneuvers like the Epley maneuver are not effective.
Instructions for Left-Sided BPPV:
Starting Position:
Sit upright on the edge of your bed or a flat surface.
Place your feet on the floor.
Lie Down to the Left:
Turn your head 45 degrees to the right.
Quickly lie down on your left side, ensuring that your head is resting on the bed and still turned to the right at a 45-degree angle.
Hold this position for 30 seconds or until the dizziness subsides, whichever is longer.
Return to Sitting Position:
Return to the upright sitting position and wait for 30 seconds.
Lie Down to the Right:
Turn your head 45 degrees to the left.
Quickly lie down on your right side, ensuring that your head is resting on the bed and still turned to the left at a 45-degree angle.
Hold this position for 30 seconds or until the dizziness subsides, whichever is longer.
Return to Sitting Position:
Return to the upright sitting position and wait for 30 seconds.
Repeat the Exercises:
Perform the above sequence five times in a row. This constitutes one set.
Aim to complete three sets per day: one in the morning, one at midday, and one in the evening.
Consistency is key for the effectiveness of these exercises.
It is common to feel dizzy during these exercises, but this should decrease over time as your brain habituates.
