The Lempert roll maneuver, also known as the "barbecue roll," is a technique used to treat Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) affecting the horizontal semicircular canal. Here are step-by-step instructions for performing the Lempert roll maneuver for left-sided BPPV:
Instructions for Left-Sided BPPV:
1. Initial Position:
The patient begins by lying on their back (supine position).
2. Roll onto Your Left Side:
The patient turns 90 degrees to the left, towards the affected side, lying on their left side. Hold this position until the vertigo subsides, plus an additional 30 seconds.
3. Roll onto Your Back:
The patient then turns 90 degrees to the right, returning to lie on their back and facing upward. Hold this position until the vertigo stops, plus an additional 30 seconds.
4. Roll onto Your Right Side:
Continue turning another 90 degrees to the right, so the patient is lying on their right side. Hold this position until the vertigo stops, plus an additional 30 seconds.
5. Roll onto Your Stomach:
The patient tucks their chin in and turns another 90 degrees to the right, lying on their stomach, propped up on their elbows. Hold this position until the vertigo stops, plus an additional 30 seconds.
6. Roll onto Your Left Side:
The patient continues to turn another 90 degrees to the right, returning to lie on their left side. Hold this position until the vertigo stops, plus an additional 30 seconds.
7. Return to Sit:
The patient slowly returns to a sitting position.
Important Notes:
Perform this maneuver three times a day until you have two consecutive days without vertigo.
It's common to feel dizzy during the maneuver, but this should decrease with repeated sessions.
Avoid quick or sudden head movements throughout the day after performing the maneuver.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider.
